MetroWest Housing Coalition Advances Advocacy, Education, and Community Engagement in March

3.5 Homeless Advocacy Day 2

Over the past few weeks, the MetroWest Housing Coalition (MWHC) continued to strengthen its presence across the region and at the State House, engaging in a series of events focused on housing advocacy, food security, immigrant rights, and community education.

Advocating for Housing at the State Level

On March 5, MWHC participated in the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless’ Advocacy Day at the State House. The day began with a conference focused on statewide housing challenges and policy priorities, including, but not limited to:

  • Codifying the Residential Assistance for Families in Transition (RAFT) program into state statute;
  • Easing access to Massachusetts ID cards for individuals experiencing homelessness;
  • Restoring the right to shelter for children and families;
  • Strengthening the HomeBASE program, and;
  • Increasing housing subsidies through the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program.

In the afternoon, the Coalition joined advocates from across the Commonwealth for a series of key legislators and their staff, including the Offices of Representative Simon Cataldo, Representative Danielle Gregoire, Representative James Arena-DeRosa, Representative David Linsky, Senate President Karen Spilka, Senator Becca Rausch, and Representative Dan Sena. These conversations provided an opportunity to elevate the urgent housing needs of MetroWest communities and advocate for policies that support housing stability and affordability.

Connecting Housing and Food Access

On March 17, MWHC attended the MetroWest Food Collaborative’s 4th Annual Policy Summit at Framingham State University. The summit brought together regional leaders and advocates to explore the intersection of food access, public policy, and community well-being.

By participating in this convening, MWHC had the opportunity to reinforce the critical link between stable housing and food security. Coalition representatives advocated for the idea that having access to both shelter and food are essential to building healthy, resilient communities.

Empowering the Next Generation of Advocates

Also on March 17, MWHC partnered with Wellesley College’s Civic Engagement Department to facilitate a coalition-building workshop for students participating in a spring break community immersion program.

The session focused on equipping students with the tools and strategies needed to mobilize communities and drive meaningful change. Through this engagement, MWHC helped foster the next generation of leaders committed to housing justice and community advocacy.

Standing in Solidarity with Immigrant Communities

On March 18, MWHC returned to the State House to participate in the MIRA Coalition’s Immigrants’ Day, centered around the theme “Courage Over Fear.”

The event emphasized the power of collective action at a time when many immigrant communities are facing heightened uncertainty. Advocates gathered not only to be seen, but to be heard, bringing their lived experiences and policy expertise directly to decision-makers.

Coalition members met with the offices of Representative Carmen Gentile, Representative Jack Lewis, Representative Kate Hogan, and Senator Jamie Eldridge to reinforce the importance of policies that reflect the real needs of immigrant communities.

Looking Ahead

Across these events, the MetroWest Housing Coalition demonstrated its ongoing commitment to advocacy, collaboration, and education. Whether engaging with policymakers, partnering with community organizations, or mentoring emerging leaders, MWHC continues to play a vital role in advancing housing equity throughout the region.
